Hiking in the Rain, Pisgah State Park, NH, 2003

The silence was deafening in the forest that day

As I hiked right along with nothing to say

Songs just formed in my head with ease

but meaning herself remained just a tease

I labored & sweat & drank like a fish

I watched & I mused & I perfected my wish

Slogging though fog and walking through rain

Unusually alert and feeling no pain

I had never before looked without a view

but the shadowy distances spoke to me anew:

You’re trapped, too much, inside your own head

Away with your books - to the hills instead!
