This was inspired, and somewhat copied, from a Sandman comic spinoff I picked up because I loved the art. It's probaby the most popular thing I've done. The hair was a lot of fun to do - I love the large chunks of black over the pale skin.
For some reason, a copy of Interview magazine lay strewn about my collage apartment that contained a great picture for an advertisement for something ephermal. I cut it out for my scrapbook, drew it once or twice, and tried my hand at painting it a while back. While I completely failed to bring out the translucent nature of her hair from the photo, I do really like the eye, nose, and particularly the neck. From a time when I used nothing but shades of burnt sienna for skin.
Julianne Moore starred in a movie adaptation of the Michael Cunningham novel, The Hours. She's a beautiful woman, & I couldn't resist trying out this one from a promotional photo. I was really happy with this one, esp. the rhythm I was able to get in her hair. Still gotta work on hands, though.
One of the top five live shows I have ever been to was Midnight Oil on the Blue Sky Mine tour at URI. My best friend Eric Peterson's Dad drove us down from Vermont and we were both just blown away. Such power and intensity I had not yet experienced. Their lead singer Peter Garett is a striking man - over six feet tall, complely bald, and whirling and shreiking like a banchee on stage. He's very photogenic & i've got numerous photos of him in various poses. This is from one of his more pensive pictures. I threw this painting together in a few hours one night, painting in the basement of my Waltham apartment while Kelly and her friends drank wine upstairs.
This is an original. I started with the idea of a Russian woman but, as usual, ended up referencing some pictures for help, so her cheeks and teeth are from some random magazine cutout. I had no idea where to place her so ended up painting a typical boring office ceiling behind her.
I think I got the basic image of this one from a comix I was reading, but it's so long ago I can't remember which one. I love the idea of blue monochromatic compisitions, but, for some reason, the blue acrylic paints I have are thinner then I'd like, so it's hard to get a consistent covering. This one beneifited from some Photoshop work, although you still can't really see her clothes at all. Perhaps i'll work on it some more one of these days...
